Lakewood Skating Foundation
The Lakewood Skating Foundation (LSF) was formed in 1987 as a result of the Lakewood Winter Club being the host club and organizing committee for the 1987 National Figure Skating Championships held in Tacoma. It was decided at that time that a separate organization from the skating club should be formed to manage any income generated from hosting the skating championships.
In 1989, the LSF started operating a Bingo game and for the next ten years enjoyed great success. The bingo operation would netting $50,000 - $100,000 per year. This money was then invested with a certain percentage distributed to skaters to subsidize ice time and competition travel expenses and another percentage was used for the overall skating operation of the Lakewood Winter Club. The Foundation also provided the start-up funding for the new highly successful, annual ice show offered each February.
During 1998, the bingo operation became unprofitable due to the expansion of state gambling and was closed. Prior to September 11, 2001, with wise investing, the LSF was able to maintain a significant investment portfolio. This allowed continued financial support for skating. In addition to the individual grants to specific skaters, funding was provided for club ice time, Pilates exercise classes, jump harnesses, and equipment such as cameras and a rink sound system. The Foundation also compensated the Skating Director and Choreographer. A depressed economy and the uncertain security in the world have taken a significant toll on the Foundation portfolio and support of ice skating. Alternative sources of income are needed to continue our past support, especially the continued production of our Ice Show, Reflections On Ice. Donations and grants to the Foundation would go a long way in securing the future of ice skating in the area.
The foundation has the ability to accept donations for the purpose of promoting figure skating and encourages individuals to consider annual donations, as well as naming the LSF in their wills for charitable purposes.
The LSF Board of Directors is comprised of 12 individuals, four of which serve as officers. The Board makes all decision as to the appropriation of funds. The LSF is a 501(c)(3) organization.
The vision of the LSF is to be nationally recognized as a leader in figure skater development and achievement by providing skaters the opportunity to achieve individual potential through a quality competitive skating program. To this extent the LWC has had several national-level competitors each year.
Becoming a competitive figure skater requires dedication to a self-imposed regimen of physical fitness and the unwavering pursuit of perfection. Competitive skaters spend two to four hours per day, every day, training with coaches and assistants needed to prepare them for their competitive levels. Competing at the Pacific Northwest Regional Championships, Pacific Coast Sectionals, U.S. Junior Nationals, and the U.S. Nationals are places to showcase this incredible effort.
